  • Disagreements are trails, not trials.
They’re paths to walk together, not battles to win.

With a little guidance, they can become safe paths that leave you both feeling understood and closer, even while disagreeing.

    What It Is
Disagree Differently is a trail guide for tough talks, packaged as a cooperative conversation card game.

Each play is one hike: you and your partner pick a topic and follow trail markers that guide you safely through the disagreement.

The game is built to get you talking about what matters as quickly as possible. That is why the deck includes just 3 Topic Cards — a training path: silly → serious → what matters most. After three plays, you may be ready to bring up your own topics, the ones you’ve been putting off.

    Who It’s For
Couples, friends, or anyone who wants to:

    • Start light with silly topics and build skills without pressure

    • Go deeper with serious topics when you want practice with real stakes

    • Bring up what matters with the people who matter

    ✿ Ages 14+

    Inside the Pack
76 cards including 28 Step Cards, 3 Topic Cards, 14 Ground Rules, 13 Communication Styles, and 16 Boundaries.

Optional expansions add fresh prompts for different life stages, like trails for new parents or long-term love. The core game is complete on its own.

  • There’s no setup. No rules to memorize.

Just open the box and start playing.

Just find the Step Cards and follow them through any disagreement, silly or serious.

Open the pack, find and order the step cards. They are your trail, follow them step by step as you properly gather what you need for any disagreement (phase 1) and then along the trail through the disagreement (phase 2).

Disagree about anything (something fun for practice, tough for more of a challenge, or whatever’s been on your mind).

You win if you both can make the other feel genuinely heard. If not, there’s always another time.

[insert “how to play (< 1 min)” video]

  • This game took 12 months to research conflict science, translate the findings into a design, and iterate that design with friends and family. Instead of rushing to market.

    Designed with Purpose
This game was built to help you be yourself, feel heard, and stay close — even while disagreeing.

    Backed by Research
We gathered over 500 good-faith techniques from across 13 different fields — from couples therapy and psychology to public health, conflict mediation, and dialogue design.

These were distilled with 10 experts in disagreement into one simple, guided card game — then tested with families and friends to make sure it’s fun, clear, and genuinely useful.

    Goals
    Personal outcomes / societal outcomes

Disagreements aren’t the problem, they’re part of the solution.

But we missed the whole point of them. Disagreements aren’t meant to be won. They’re not about wit and evidence. We can’t shout our way to feeling heard.

We have to retrain our understanding of the tune of disagreements. They’re not all meant for conflict. The point is to let mutually exclusive perspectives coexist, otherwise we pivot to violence and repression. The point is to stay connected. The point is to discover more nuanced solutions to society’s ailments.

And the only way to change minds and save the relationship, and cool yourself and everyone else around you down, is to make them feel heard.

    Factors: Barriers and Motivators

    • Multi-step behavior

    • Fear of conflict / need for safety

    • Awareness, education

    • In this case, that research showed people form these new behaviors through passive learning (e.g. videos or reading), but must practice the skill. These research streams lead to to what intervention medium and which levers are most important to this specific audience and set of behaviors. Selecting “games” is a natural medium for this: it scaffolds multiple behaviors, allows repeated practice, and makes learning social. From this, I design evidence-based prototypes: functional but bare-bones, waiting to be refined by the people I hope it helps.

What’s the difference between Disagree Differently and the Topic Expansion Packs?
One is the card game that guides you through any disagreement. It provides three topics to guide you from fun to tough to being able to bring up your own - this is the mission. The others are for if you want more practice before bringing up your own. They’re based in research as to topics other people want help bringing up. These are purely digital packs because the printing resources, shipping aren’t worth it and mean higher prices for you.

What’s the difference between Disagree Differently and other conversation card games?
There are a lot of cool conversation card games out there. Their primary mechanic is by providing thoughtful questions or topics players can talk about. But I haven’t found any that provide guardrails for how the conversation (or disagreement) can unfold safely. They’re sometimes based in a single theory of conversation science, but none offer a translation of the entirety of all related and rigorous fields.
